Why Stainless Steel Is The New Plastic For Your Baby (And For Your Peace Of Mind!)

Some plastic bowls contain substances like BPA or phthalates. You do not want these in your child's food. They can affect hormones. Stainless steel does not have these substances. It does not give off any smell or taste. Not even when you boil it. Flavors like tomato or curry do not soak into the material. An extra benefit: many brands include a silicone cover. This cover feels soft. It does not get hot and protects small hands and teeth. This silicone is food-safe. It can withstand high heat (up to 220 °C) and contains no harmful substances. Exactly what you want for your baby.

Glass can break. Thin plastic quickly gets cracks or ugly stains. Stainless steel stays intact, even if it falls hard from the high chair. This means it lasts for years, even for a younger brother or sister. The silicone cover absorbs impact, makes less noise on the table, and prevents scratches on your table top. The metal itself does not rust and barely scratches. This way, bacteria have no chance to settle in small grooves. Because it is so strong, you can easily take the tableware to childcare, the park, or on holiday.

For your baby, eating is more than just filling their tummy. Your child feels the smooth, cool inside and the warm food. This is a fun difference to discover. The sound of the spoon against the edge makes a soft 'ting'. This helps your baby learn what happens when they tap something. The silicone rim provides grip. This stops the bowl from slipping out of tiny hands. Your child learns to hold things and feed themselves this way. Choose bright colors, like a green bowl with a silver inside. This helps your baby see where the food is. This is good for practicing hand-eye coordination.

Steel is very recyclable. A good stainless steel set replaces many plastic containers that become ugly or break after a while. That saves money and reduces waste. It is a small effort with a big result. Is your child older? Then you can use the stainless steel bowl for a snack, when camping, or for craft supplies. This way, the higher purchase price pays for itself.

• Choose safe steel: Go for 18/8 or 18/10 stainless steel. This is also called AISI 304 or 316. It will not rust. It can also handle acidic foods well, like tomatoes or fruit.
• Check if the silicone cover can be removed: A removable cover is easier to clean. You can also boil it to sterilize. If the cover wears out, you can just buy a new one. The bowl itself will last for years.
• Look for a smooth inside: No edges or seams mean no food residue is left behind. This is more hygienic. Shiny stainless steel quickly shows stains. This helps you see right away if it is truly clean.
• Look at the size: Does the bowl fit in your dishwasher, bottle warmer, and on the high chair tray? Check this beforehand. A diameter of 10 to 12 centimeters is perfect for the first solids.
• Do not buy bowls with an inner coating: Paint or a non-stick coating can come off if you use a sharp spoon or hot water. Pure metal is the safest. It also lasts the longest.
• Check if it is dishwasher safe: Most stainless steel baby bowls can go in the top rack of the dishwasher at 65 °C. Always read the packaging for safety information.
