Why Babies Pretend to Call (and What You Can Do!)
21 March 2025
Babies often love to pretend they are calling. They watch what adults do and try to copy it. As a baby, they often see mom or dad holding a phone and talking. This is how babies learn about the world around them. It also shows they are interested in talking and connecting with others.
Why Do Babies Do This?
- Imitation: Babies learn by watching and copying. When they see people talk on a phone, they try to do the same. This helps them understand how communication works. They playfully discover what their own behavior looks like and how to adjust it. They also learn about facial expressions and tone in conversations.
- Language Development: By making pretend phone calls, babies practice sounds, noises, and words. They repeat what they hear and experiment with their own voice. This game is a first step in learning language. Repeating simple sounds helps babies later use full words and sentences. They also practice intonation and speech rhythm.
- Social Skills: Babies learn that a conversation means more than just talking. They learn to listen and respond when someone else is on the line. This helps them understand the basics of a two-way conversation. They discover it is fun to play and communicate together. They also learn how to pay attention and respond with empathy.
- Symbolic Play: By pretending a toy phone is real, babies learn that objects can also have other meanings. This play stimulates imagination and creativity. A block or another object can temporarily become a phone in their game. This way, they discover that things can have multiple functions and it boosts their imagination.
